Your Pet Terrapin and Your Health
Good Husbandry for Keeping Pet Terrapins

Reptile keeping as a mainstream pet has grown immensely during the last few years. With the present economic downturn people are tending to sway to more economical options for exotic pets. One of the most cost effective is keeping Terrapins.

The price of a small terrapin can be inexpensive compared to a Snake or a Lizard however you must still provide all the necessary requirements to keep them healthy. Important needs to remember are a good sized living area, UV lighting, Balanced diet and most importantly a well maintained habitat.

Some people are not aware that most reptiles carry the Salmonella bacteria with them. These bacteria can be a threat not only to the reptile keeper but also to other members of the family or public if kept in a store setup. People who may be handling the terrapin within the store could also be at risk of contracting it which is why it is important to keep Byofresh hand foam mousse close by and use it on a regular basis when handling any animal in store. The Byofresh Range offers a compact range of Sanitizers and Cleaning Sprays for a variety of Pet Homes.

Under the genus Salmonella there are about 2000 different forms of bacteria and all of them are considered as a pathogenic or disease causing bacteria. Some of them in extreme cases can be deadly. Generally a disease condition caused by Salmonella bacteria is called salmonellosis.

Like all other reptiles Terrapins have a high carriage rate of Salmonella. The Salmonella disease being passed from animals to humans is called a zoonosis but fortunately Salmonella cannot get into the human body through your skin, it can only be contracted through your mouth. Therefore the easiest way to prevent this is from good hygiene practice. Always keep a good habit of washing your hands using soap, antiseptic lotion or with a Byofresh Hand gel every time you come into contact with animals. Keeping their tanks clean and keep handling to a minimum will dramatically reduce Salmonella contraction.

In Summary, Good hygiene practice will reduce getting Salmonella from your Terrapins.

We love our pets we love ourselves too.

Yumega - Improve Your Pets Health
Yumega Proven to improve your pets health,Naturally

The range comprises of a brand of natural dog and cat products mainly known as Yumega/Yumega Plus/Yumove and Yumega Cat which all have proven benefits such as, reducing moulting improving skin condition and helps restore your pet’s natural coat.
The award winning company, have produced some fantastic products that have now been well established in the pet sector and should be found in all pet retail stores throughout Ireland.

Yumega/Yumega Cat
If your dog or cat cast’s a lot or has a poor natural coat condition I strongly recommend you add Yumega/Yumega Cat to their diet
And see the results for yourself

As an owner of both dogs and cats I know how frustrating this can be at this time of the year

Yumega Plus
A commonly asked question in pet shops from consumers is “Do you have anything to stop my dog itching” and when the customer is questioned one of the main reason is a low quality diet caused by feeding tinned foods or a low ingredient of Omega 3&6 in their diet which has proven to cause itchy sensitive skin and an all over poor coat quality, by adding Yumega Plus to your pets diet will calm the itching in the skin and naturally improve the general health of the skin and coat.

Useful hint for this time of the year to prevent Hayfever in your dog
By adding Yumega Plus to your pet's diet, pollen and other allergens will find it more difficult to get into the skin, so it no longer requires scratching. And the skin calming effects of the fresh salmon and starflower oil in Yumega Plus will reduce the itchiness.

Additional product
Yumove
The triple joint supplement for older and more active dogs provides all the key nutrients required for healthy joints in a single supplement, made from all natural ingredients such as Chondroitin (Green lipped mussel) and Glucosamine, helps promote mobility and supports joint structure which brings comfort to the joints.

FACT!! - Your Dog Can Save Your Lawn
Did you know that by placing "Dog Rocks" in your Dogs Water Bowl will help stop burn patches caused by your loving Pet taking a Pee?
These 100% Natural and Proven rocks mined in Australia have been a hit every summer with apparent and dramatic differences being seen within days.
"Dog Rocks" is laboratory tested, safe for all household pets, doesn't affect the pH balance of their drinking water or urine, and is the perfect solution to stop burn patches occurring when their dog pees on their lawns & shrubs.
The product is easy to use; owners simply place the rocks in their pet's water bowl and fill it with no more than 2 litres of water, then refresh & change water as usual. Lawns quickly start to look green and fresh and as long as the rocks are changed every 2 months, patches will be a thing of the past.
Dog Rocks hold special properties that actually mean pets will be fertilizing lawns, rather than destroying them. The paramagnetic igneous rock absorbs from the water some of the impurities that turn the grass brown, they act like a sponge and reach a saturation point at around 2 months when they need to be changed.

Alternative Pond Fish
It's that time of the year again - short sleeve shirts, increase in cider sales and requests come in for pond fish.

Everyone is familiar with Goldfish and Koi varieties, all of which are now in stock and the colours are amazing.

But here are a few pond fish that you may not have considered:

Orfe
These are very hardy pond fish and can acclimatize to almost any pond water conditions. Orfe are commonly added to a pond to add movement and colour. We have two colours available, Golden and Blue. Best sold as a shoal and grow fast.

Tench
These fish stand out from other pond fish with their smooth, non-scaled body and catfish like whiskers. They use these whiskers to source food along the bottom of the pond. Tench are mainly purchased to stir up the pond bottom, preventing sludge build up and cleaning the pond. We have Green Tench for sale now, a beautiful olive green colour.

Sturgeon and Sterlets
These beautiful ancient scale-less fish have become very popular in larger sized ponds. They feed mainly off the bottom, but like koi can be trained to hand feed at the surface. The main difference between these two fish, is that Sterlets are much slower growing and therefore suitable for more pond sizes. Our most popular seller is the Diamond Sturgeon due to its lovely markings.

Redfin Rudd
These remind me of the Tinfoil Barb of the pond, shimmering silver body with lovely red fins. They are similar in requirements to Orfe, but only grow to half their size making them ideal for smaller ponds. Best sold as a shoal.

Doctor Fish - Garra Rufa
A new craze and type of beauty treatment is sweeping through health spa's across the country.

The treatment involves sitting with your feet in a tank, vat or pool while Doctor Fish/ Garra Ruffa nibble away the dead bit of skin leaving the feet soft and smooth.

About the Garra Rufa
These fish are an exotic freshwater tropical fish usually found in warm springs and river basins in the Middle East. They have been used for centuries on people to cleanse, soften and help heal skin problems.

While removing the dead skin, the fish also secretes Diathanol which is an enzyme well known to improve the regeneration of skin cells. The Garra Rufa gently remove the dead skin cells by nibbling (they have no teeth, so maybe gumming is a better word!!) while causing no damage to healthy skin and allowing new skin cells to develop and heal quicker.

Quick Stats
pH 6.5 - 7.5
Temp 24 - 28C

Colour
Silver/Grey

Size
They can vary in size from 1" to 4". However most popular imported sizes are 1" to 2". These sizes allows more fish to be contained in a Spa Tank, meaning more mouths to work on those problem feet!.

Feeding
The fish should be fed once a day as much as they will consume within a 2 minute period. Garra Rufa will feed on a wide range of flake, pellets and frozen food. We recommend Nutrafin Max Pleco Logs 95g - HGA6972.
